Obituary of Stanley Flight
Stanley Flight of Woburn peacefully passed away on August 12th 2020, at 94 years of age. He was the husband of Phyllis A (Young) Flight. Stan was born in Everett MA and raised in Saugus. He was the son of Arthur S. and Mabel (Coles) Flight.
At 17 years old Stan joined the Navy. He was proud to be stationed on the USS Missouri, and was in attendance at the ceremony when Japan surrendered at the end of WWII, on September 2nd 1945. Stan met Jim Mahoney. They became best friends, and later on in life, Stan introduced Jim to Phyllis’s sister Beverly, whom he married and they became brothers-in-law.
As a young man, Stan played the guitar as well as being a great piano player. Stan tried different jobs, ultimately deciding on being a carpenter and following in the footsteps of his dad. He became active in the Carpenters Union, eventually becoming President of Local 26 and Business Agent of Local 41.
Stan loved sailing; he was a lifelong member of Palmers Cove Yacht Club in Salem, MA. He was also a member of the Woburn Housing Authority for over 25 years.
Stan and Phyllis bought a house in Falmouth, MA, thinking it would be a great place to sail! Unfortunately, shortly after that he contracted encephalitis in November 1981. Life changed for the Flights, and he could no longer work or play music. Although life was different, they still made it work and had a wonderful life together.
That wonderful life included fun in Falmouth with Paul McLatchy and Charlie Layman. Bob Fitzmaurice was his Seista Key, Florida vacation buddy each March. When Stan was in Woburn, his lifelong pal Jim Mahoney and he would walk Horn Pond daily and enjoy a hearty breakfast after. Stan also had a buddy, Jim DiPanfilo, who he would spend many an hour at the dog track. Stan was an avid Red Sox and Patriots fan and he loved his sports!
When Stan became wheelchair bound, his son Bob took him to Bickford’s every Sunday for breakfast. Then they would enjoy a ride to Salem to watch the boats and reminisce about the times the family sailed together.
In their younger years Stan and Phyllis traveled to England, Portugal, and took many cruises. They also visited Newfoundland, the birth place of his parents.
Stanley leaves his wife of 53 years, Phyllis (Young) Flight. He also leaves his children, Kevin Flight and his wife Becky of Woburn, Judy Meuse and her husband Jerry of Sagamore Beach, and Robert Flight and his wife Lynn of Woburn. He also had two beautiful grandchildren, Haley (Flight) Johnston and her husband Matthew of England, and Jared Flight of Woburn.
Stanley loved his church, North Congregational of Woburn, where he was a longtime faithful member. A Graveside service will be held at the Woodbrook Cemetery, 100 Salem St., Woburn on Saturday, August 15 at 12:30 pm. In lieu of flowers remembrances in Stan’s name can be given to the North Congregational Church 896 Main St Woburn, MA 01801. Arrangements by the Graham Funeral Home, Woburn.
