Obituary of Edward A Ackerley

Edward A. Ackerley, of Woburn, formerly of Somerville, passed away at his home after a lengthy illness on Thursday, January 11, 2024. He was 84 years of age. Born and raised in Somerville, he was the son of the late Edward J., and the late Frances E. (West) Ackerley. Edward grew up in Union Square, and graduated from Somerville Schools. He came to Woburn from Somerville in 1995. Edward worked for the City of Somerville as a Code Enforcement Inspector for the Somerville Board of Health. He retired as Senior Code Enforcement Inspector in 2004. Edward enjoyed playing golf. He was a member of the Green Meadows Golf Club in Hudson, New Hampshire, and was an annual participant in the Ackerley Memorial Golf Tournament. He was also a fan of NASCAR racing, and attended many NASCAR events around the country; as well as being an avid Boston Bruins hockey fan and a Matchbox car collector. Edward is survived by his devoted sister, Ann Ferrari of Woburn. In addition to his parents, Edward was also preceded in death by three brothers, the late George, John, and Jim Ackerley; and three sisters, Barbara Ackerley, Elizabeth Mulligan and Mary Cooper. He was the brother-in-law of the late Marion, Helen and Mary Ackerley and Paul “Puppy” Cooper; and the uncle of his late nephews James and Randy Ackerley, niece Jean Mulligan and great, great nephew Zachary Tompkins. Edward was a devoted uncle of numerous nieces and nephews, great nieces and nephews, and great, great nieces and nephews. Visiting hours will be at the Graham Funeral Home, 3 Arlington Rd., Woburn on Monday, January 15 from 4:00-8:00 pm. The funeral will be held from the funeral home on Tuesday, January 16 at 9:00 am, followed by a Funeral Mass at St. Anthony’s Church, 851 Main St., Woburn at 10:00 am. Burial will be at the Calvary Cemetery in Winchester. Contributions in Edward’s memory may be made to St. Jude Childrens Research Hospital, 501 St. Jude Pl., Memphis, TN 38105 (www.stjude.org)
