Obituary of Robert A. “Bob” Bennett

Robert A. “Bob” Bennett, 85, of Beverly Hills, Florida; formerly of Woburn, passed away at his home on Tuesday, August 10. He was the loving husband of Merlene (Murchie) Bennett. Born in Peabody and raised in Woburn, he was the son of the late Clarence, and the late Marguerite (Cail) Bennett. Bob was a graduate of Woburn High School, and he was a U.S. Korean War era army veteran. Bob worked as a Letter Carrier in Woburn for the United States Postal Service for many years, retiring in 1996. After his retirement, Bob and Merlene moved to Florida, where he became active in the Pine Ridge Community where they resided. Bob was a life-long sports fan, as well as a youth coach. He was instrumental in founding the Woburn Track Club and involved in developing an elementary track program for children. In 1996, the City of Woburn recognized his efforts for bringing organized track and cross country to the city’s youth. In addition to his wife Merlene, Bob is survived by three sons, Robert Bennett and his wife Tina of North Carolina, Scot Bennett and his wife Sue of New Jersey, and John Bennett and his wife Pamela of Amesbury; and six grandchildren, Scot Jr., Ryan, Sean, Ethan, Blake, and Abigail. He was preceded in death by his twin brother, the late John Bennett. A funeral service will be held at the Graham Funeral Home, 3 Arlington Rd., Woburn on Wednesday, August 18 at 11:00 am, followed by burial at the Woodbrook Cemetery in Woburn. Visiting hours will be at the funeral home on Tuesday afternoon, from 2:00-5:00 pm. Contributions in Bob’s memory may be made to Vitas Hospice, 3280 W. Audubon Park Path, Lecanto, FL 34461
