Obituary of Walter L. Dewar
Walter Lee Dewar of Woburn passed away surrounded by his family on Wednesday, April 8, 2026, at Lahey Hospital in Burlington due to complications from pneumonia. He was 86.
He was the son of Mabel A. (Hay) and Walter R. Dewar and the older brother of identical twin Kenneth R. Dewar. Walter was the beloved husband of Jean A. (DeMita) Dewar and the cherished father of Eric W. Dewar and Lindsey A. Dewar. He also leaves behind Eric’s wife, Greta, and grandchildren Theo and Ronan.
Walter was born and raised in West Somerville and was a member of the Clarendon Hill Presbyterian Church. He graduated from Somerville High School in 1957 and attended Northeastern University College of Engineering where he earned a Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering and a Master of Science in Engineering Management. While at Northeastern, he participated in the Reserve Officers’ Training Corps.
Upon graduation, Walter served as a first lieutenant in the United States Army with the 293rd Engineer Battalion in Baumholder, Germany, for two years. After he was honorably discharged in 1965, he married his high school sweetheart Jean and settled in Woburn, where they lived for over sixty years.
Walter began his professional career at Honeywell and retired from Stone & Webster. In retirement, Walter consulted on engineering projects throughout Massachusetts and Canada. He was a member of the Society of Professional Engineers.
Walter is survived by sister-in-law Jennifer C. Dewar and nieces Heather L. (Paul) Dinsmore and Laurie E. Dewar and by sister-in-law Carolyn J. DeMita and nephew Nicholas A. (Michelle) DeMita. He is predeceased by his brother Kenneth, sister-in-law Dorothy DeMita Driscoll, brother-in-law Donald J. DeMita, and son-in-law Jerry J. Nolan.
